Wireless BattleMesh, the 18th edition of an international community-network festival, is taking place in the village of Gornji Karin. For one week, from September 7–13, 2026 (with build-up and clean-up weeks scheduled around it), 50 participants joined from all around Europe. The format mixes camp life with a hackathon, featuring hands-on building, troubleshooting, knowledge sharing, and discussions on resilient, community owned communication. Each edition takes place in a different location with the goal of meeting local communities throughout Europe. Pueblo Escondido Residency, a place for community meetings and artists, hosts this edition of Battlemesh.
BattleMesh and Pueblo Escondido Residency are inviting 12th of September at 18h, local community members to join public presentations and a showcase of the findings from the Croatian edition.

The event will conclude with open conversations and a soft techno-house DJ session played by DJ Ad’Struction, France and Live Visuals performance by Dina, London UK.
The Wireless Battle of the Mesh has a long-standing tradition of traveling across Europe to connect diverse technical communities. Previous editions have been successfully held in cities such as Berlin, Maribor, Athens, Vienna, and many others, attracting hundreds of developers, activists, and researchers dedicated to the advancement of decentralized, community-operated networking.
Vesna Manojlovic is a Community Builder at the RIPE NCC and the initiator of this Croatian BattleMesh edition. She comments: “While my family is originally from Gračac and currently reside in Amsterdam, I am incredibly excited to create this opportunity for local community members in Zadar county and Croatia to join us, meet, discuss, share, connect, and learn with friends arriving from all over Europe.”
== What is the Battlemesh? == Battlemesh is short name for ‘Wireless Battle of the Mesh’ an annual event that started as a symbolic competition/demonstration around optimization of network infrastructures. It was initiated around (open) non-commercial wireless tech by people who develop and deploy it for access and joy of diverse local communities and communal events (sharing ethos of open and free systems).
== What makes the battlemesh different? == Though it comes from technical practice, the event also includes concerns over care for usage, communal growth and dynamics, regulations and policies, as well as work in advocacy, activism, hardware and related (techo-social) infrastructures.
== What is the story of the battlemesh? == Initially started as an event to compare and improve different WiFi Mesh routing algorithms used by the various Freifunk communities, it quickly became clear that the community aspect of community-operated networks is at least as important as the technology itself – so today there is a broad mix of people from different communities sharing their experience and know-how. These days Battlemesh is a meeting of people from various communities and organizations around the globe, who are participating or interested in decentralized networks, communication infrastructure and their communities.
About Pueblo Escondido
Pueblo Escondido is a residency and cultural space in Karin Gornji, near Zadar, developed within a restored traditional rural property and garden using natural materials and site-sensitive design. The space supports artistic research, workshops, prototyping, collective living, and public-facing cultural activities. Surrounded by a protected natural environment and equipped for practical making, including work with wood and stone, Pueblo Escondido offers an ideal context for the development of an outdoor game rooted in ecology, craftsmanship, and participation.
